Givenchy's announcement that it will no longer show couture, raises the greater question of couture's destiny. The house will continue to make custom clothing by appointment, which is how branded couture began with Charles Frederick Worth. The art of couture however is not simply a product of consumption but the most masterful design work of the recent centuries. Its continuation is guaranteed in part by the fact that all originally single made clothing is couture, but the grand scale is what is at risk.

The couture show is more than an elaborate spectacle. The shows function as avant garde, to inspire and challenge, making them culturally significant and reaching a much greater audience through the press. The question then is not if couture will continue but how it can continue to publicly promote aesthetic experimentation. In an era of increasing eco ethics and global justice, both real and ideological decoupage is increasingly negated. We may feel as though decadence is a thing of the past but elegance and style are timeless and essential to Western cultural values, especially in France. The solution is relevancy and growth, as preservation may be the only thing that ensures death.

If couture as design and cultural practice ends then we can only hope the experimentation will live in ready to wear. Resort collections are an interesting place between that designers can sometimes use for more limited runs. The idea of clothing in edition is part of what allows fashion to be regarded as a distinguished object of appreciation.

Kristen Stewart has been reliving the Little Black Dress (LBD) trend during the promotion for The Twilight Saga‘s 3rd installment, Eclipse. During the premiere night in Rome (left), she wore a one-shouldered ruffled Marchesa dress and Roger Vivier platforms. For the photo call in Italy (right, she picked a J. Mendel tweed and organza dress paired with peep toe pumps. At the premiere in Korea, Kristen Stewart (center), opted a belted, long-sleeve Prabal Gurung minidress.

State of Exception

Academics argue that fashion photographs establish norms. On the contrary, looking at vintage fashion advertisements we can see that fashion simply creates an ongoing state of exception. These images did not in time become norms. So, in the same manner that the political hegemony operates by the state of exception, so does fashion. But with fashion we have nothing to fear. The fashion photograph is simply a theater of aesthetic suspense. This is how fashion photography functions as contemporary art - in the realm of appreciation. Mary J. Blige and Catherine Malandrino New Clothing Line

I think R&B icon Mary J. Blige and designer Catherine Malandrino are one of the modern fairy godmothers. These two ladies seem to enjoy charitable works. Following their successful T-shirt line, Mary J. Blige and Catherine Malandrino collaborated to create Malandrino + FFAWN clothing line. All of the proceeds were given to Blige’s FFAWN foundation (The Foundation of the Advancement of Women Now, Inc.). This fashion for cause aimed to support some of the graduates of Women’s Academy of Excellence to college.
