A Little "Ta-Ra--Ra-Boom De-Ay" for Your Mon-De-Ay

Tell me this fun little ditty doesn't get stuck in your head the rest of the day! I've been envisioning myself Cancan dancing in a big pink dress ever since I found this on Youtube. Here's what the historian Holbrook Jackson had to say about this all-too-catchy tune:

"In the 1890's the chorus song "Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay" spread like a dancing flame through the land, obsessing the minds of young and old, gay and sedate until it became a veritable song-pest, provoking satires upon itself, even in the music halls of its origins. No song ever took a people in quite the same way: from 1892 to 1896 it affected the country {England} like an epidemic..."

The version above is from the 1940's film "Happy Go Lucky," but the original songstress that took the popular American song and turned it into a hit in England, was singer/dancer Lottle Collins. While touring in vaudeville in the United States in 1891, she heard the song "Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay!" After she sang it at the Tivoli Music Hall in London in November 1891, it became her signature piece {source}. And isn't she divine!? No wonder the song was such a hit...

The List: French Pop á La Carte.

::I have been feeling guilty lately about how behind I am at responding to your individual comments {though I always go visit your blogs!}. I read and love every single one of them, but I just get busy...and forgetful. So, to make up for it, I thought I would make you a fun playlist of some of my favorite cheeky, sexy French pop music -- a great soundtrack for sunny day driving, cooking crepes, or dancing around the house in lingerie {or flannel PJ's, as the case may be}. And, who couldn't use a bit of a midweek pick-me-up? Enjoy!

...and tell me this video is not adorably hilarious!

*P.S. This is off-topic, but important: if you can help, here is the link for The American Red Cross. They are sending funds to Haiti to help in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake. The average Haitian lives on $2 a day, so you can't imagine how far even a little can go!

The List: Top 15 Albums of 2009

Everyone is coming out with their "Best Of" lists for 2009, and being a sucker for lists of any kind, I wanted to jump on the bandwagon! So, won't you please allow me to play music critic for a day? I'm very opinionated about music -- not in the "I'm cooler than you, because I listen to X, Y, and Z" way, but in the "I Know What I Like" kind of way. I don't talk about my music-loves on this blog as much as I should...maybe because I feel that music is a very personal thing, and I don't necessarily want to push my tastes on others. But, this seems like as good a time as any to do a little pushing {*wink*}. What were your favorite albums of the year? I would LOVE to know what was on your heavy-rotation! These are my top 15 picks for most-love-worthy albums of the year [in no particular order!]:
  1. Grizzly Bear/Vekatimest :: complex, yet poppy vocals; the phrase "crescendos of happiness" comes to mind.
  2. Bat for Lashes/Two Suns :: melodic and moody, with some gothic/electronic influences; her aesthetic is just amazing.
  3. Florence and the Machine/Lungs :: cheeky, intense song writing, with mythic themes; a killer, powerful voice.
  4. Camera Obscura/My Maudlin Career :: sweet and melancholic, but never sad or sappy; good for curling up in your PJ's.
  5. Depeche Mode/Sounds of the Universe :: a surprisingly strong comeback; an even more intense and eerie take on their old sound.
  6. Dirty Projectors/Bitte Orca :: a quirky, slightly atonal mix of R&B and artsy-indie-ingenuity.
  7. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros/Up from Below :: the most underrated album of the year! Every song is fun, free-wheeling, and catchy as hell; great for driving with the windows down.
  8. Lady Gaga/The Fame Monster :: C'mon...you know you love her. Her videos are amazing, her costumes are amazing...her music makes you dance. What more can you ask for?
  9. Fever Ray/Self-titled :: an absolute original; shrill, dark, distorted vocals overlay a mix of pulsing, eerie electronic music...and she makes the BEST videos ever.
  10. Neko Case/Middle Cyclone :: arguably the best alt/country singer alive, and this is arguably her best album so far; filled with poetic song-writing and intensely beautiful melodies.
  11. La Roux/Self-titled :: it takes talent to write songs this catchy; saccharin-sweet, synth-pop.
  12. The xx/xx :: sexy, subtle love songs with an 80's New Wave vibe.
  13. Yeah Yeah Yeahs/It's Blitz :: each song catchier and dancier {is that a word?} than the next.
  14. Glasvegas/Self-Titled :: this is just good, loud, fun rock-n-roll, with a sexy Scottish accent to boot...their single "Geraldine" is one of the best songs of the decade.
  15. Phoenix/Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix :: they're French and cute, which doesn't hurt; but they're also amazing at what they do, which is straight-up pop-rock goodness.

::P.S. Thanks to my Twitter & Facebook friends who made suggestions for this list, as well. I'm listening to some of the albums you mentioned...and maybe there will have to be an addendum to this list if there is anything I love!

::P.S.S. A winner has been drawn for the Perricone Cold Fusion giveaway!! Lucky, lucky you Clarissa, from Brownies and Oreos! What a great holiday gift for yourself ;)

Weekend Links.

Here I sit, a bit worse for wear and recovering from a rousing evening of chicken-dancing and hokey-pokey-ing! Oktoberfest started last night, and I'm lucky {or unlucky?} enough to live right next door to the festivities. After all of that beer and brat madness, I look forward to a low-key weekend. My boyfriend's parents are coming into town for a quick visit, so we're trying to think of yummy local restaurants to take them to...I hope they're not in the mood for German! I'm also looking forward to finally watching Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains -- a DVD that has been on my queue for ages. What are your weekend plans? Is Oktoberfest in full-force where you live??

Enjoy the links!

::Have you heard of the Museum of Everything? Outsider art is the focus of this fantastic new London museum.

::Super cute and vintage-y Holiday Cheat Sheets {free to download}.

::Bookshelf chairs on Oh, Joy! So freaking clever!

::B. Vikki Vintage shop and blog features advertising campaigns and fashion editorials from Black/African-American publications, video clips, found photographs, etc from the 1950s-1960s.

::I'm digging The X-X's new album! They are like New Order's sultrier, sweeter younger siblings. If you haven't had the pleasure yet, take a listen here and here.

::Mira Nair's new film Amelia {about the life of Amelia Earhart} is finally out! Three cheers for films about amazing women, directed by amazing women!

::Man Shops Globe is a new show on the Sundance channel about Keith Johnson -- the man who does the buying for Anthropologie stores. This is the kind of show that could persuade me to splurge on cable TV. Here is a lovely post on Poppy Talk about some of the artists featured on the show.

Love Will Tear Us Apart?

A great tattoo...and an even greater song. How can something so sad make me want to dance so much??

Favorite Song

I'm just gonna throw this out there: this is my favorite song. Ever. I'm not really sure I can explain it, but I never get tired of it. Any song that makes me want to put on platforms and dance around like a man-eating gypsy goddess is the best song ever in my book! And, seriously, can you even fathom the amazing-ness of her hair!?

Summer Anthems

Since I'm on an end-of-summer kick...

If there is one band that saved summer music for me this year, it was Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Their sound is lively, nostalgic, and very eclectic...just perfect, breezy, summer music!

I love finding that one summer anthem or album -- the one that will always remind me of the particular events of this particular summer. One stipulation is that it needs to be good for cranking up in the car and driving with the windows down! This song particularly met the requirements! It will forever remind me of front-porch Mojitos, late-night tennis matches, and singing and clapping in the car with my sweetie...

What was your favorite song or album this summer??

Music Mixes

{Image via FFFound}

My boyfriend made me the most adorable music mix this week for my birthday -- a compilation of songs that reminds him of us! I honestly think that mixes are one of the most personal, thoughtful, and budget-conscious gifts to give or receive...

He included one of our mutually-beloved songs: "Femme Fatale" by The Velvet Underground {featuring the magnificent Nico}. We love to sing this song together while he plays the guitar. We can never get through the song without cracking up. I attempt to sing in Nico's deep, melancholic voice, and he tries to do back-up vocals like a drugged-out Lou Reed.

Do you still adore music mixes as much as me?? Here is a great tutorial on the art of making music mixes, based on the music-snob novel High Fidelity.

5 Things that Make Me Happy...

I recently got tagged by the magnificent Mothersvea, and she wanted me to share 5 things that make me happy. It was really hard to pick only five...

♥Style

Style does not necessarily mean fashion, and vice versa. Style transcends wealth and prestige. Sometimes it is pre-meditated, sometimes it is natural. It can be good design, a thoughful arrangement, a personal eccentricity, or a mysterious trait you cannot quite put your finger on. I think style makes the world a place worth living, because it requires consciousness and attention to detail...it makes the everyday into something amazing.

♥My Boyfriend

What can I say? My world would be pretty boring and lonely without him to share it with. He makes me laugh. He challenges me. He enlightens me. He respects me. He rocks.

♥Delicious Food

I love food. I think about food constantly. I dream of food. It is a passion. I like cooking it, but I REALLY like eating it. I will try anything almost once. I love fried chicken just as much as I like fois gras. I like street food as much as I like 5 star restaurants. I want to travel the world and try all the yummy food from sea to shining sea. [This painting makes me laugh -- it is by one of my favorite pop artists, Ed Ruscha].

♥A Good Read

Magazines. Blogs. Classics. Philosophy. Low-brow. I don't judge -- if it stimulates my mind, makes me laugh, makes me think, makes me angry, makes me scared, or just plain entertains me, I'm happy! And yes, I read Foucault when I was three years old...just kidding.

♥Music

I'm an equal-opportunity music-listener. I love old country music, French pop, 80's new wave, hip-hop, southern rock, indie, disco, 50's rockabilly, classical, psychedelic. I have a ridiculously large music collection, and I download new stuff every week. I must have it all!! How fantastic is this old-school picture of Madonna, by the way??

I am tagging Loose Leaf Tigers, Kirafashion, The Chickadees Nest, My Special Stash, and Greedy Girl. What makes you happy????

Have a Diabolical Weekend...

I have the theme song from "Danger Diabolik" in my head today -- if you have seen this movie, you know what I mean. If you haven't seen it, and you don't mind a bit of tongue-in-cheek campiness, you really must check it out! It is sexy and funny, has great costumes, sets, and music...and the two leads [John Phillip Law and the gorgeous Marisa Mell] are adorable. Plus, there is a sexy scene with a rotating bed covered in money [yes, before 007].

Have a Diabolical weekend darlings!!!

Diamond Dogs: Rock Gods of 70's Glam

My boyfriend and I watched 70's glam rock concert videos on YouTube for an inordinate amount of time last night, and he expressed his firm belief that the best fashion and music EVER emerged in or around 1972. While I'm not sure I agree completely [it would be a 3-way tie between the 1920's, 1970's and the 1980's for me...], I do have to admit that two of the sexiest men to have shared their vocal talents and tight pants with the world were products of the early 70's glam phenomenon: Brian Ferry [of Roxy Music] and David Bowie. In any case, I have decided to take a moment to bow down and thank Roxy Music, T Rex, New York Dolls, and Bowie for what they gave us:

♥The aforementioned tight pants.
♥ Shiny lips...well, shiny anything, for both men and women.
♥ High-heel platforms.
♥ Bare chests as a fashion-statement.
♥ Feathers, fur, and sequins for daywear.
♥Animal prints.
♥Expressive makeup [i.e. lighting bolts]
♥Leotards, again for men or women.
♥Androgyny!!

Some Glam-tastic inspiration for you...

Roxy Music...Brian Eno, freaky in feathers [left] and Brian Ferry, hot in all-black[center]:

Brian Ferry was still dreamy, even when he toned down the glam and started wearing his signature ties:

And, need I mention Roxy Music had the best album covers??

T Rex, bringing the 80's metal hair before the 80's ever happened:

The New York Dolls took it all the way -- one part machismo, one part drag queen:

And of course, the sexiest man to have ever fell to earth ... [images from the Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Pinups, and Diamond Dogs eras...]

This photo just leaves me speechless, simply put:

Lydia, Being Dead Doesn't Make Things Any Easier

It's really no secret that my aesthetic sensibilities started with Lydia.
Have a relaxing weekend everyone -- curl up with a favorite film [you know, the one you know every line of], and relaxxxxxxxxxxx...
